book review: remember

I have a copy of Remember by 本杰明 in Chinese that I bought years ago in Shanghai because it was pretty. Only recently did I find an English translation so I could read the thing.

There are a couple of stories inside, both about being a comic book artist who’s just too imaginative for the system of Chinese comics. They’re pretty but in the interstitial texty bits he says how they aren’t as good as he wanted them to be. I agree that they aren’t amazing. I mean, I didn’t hate the book, but the stories weren’t nearly as interesting as the brushwork and colour. It just felt cliched and self-aggrandizing without something to really let the reader into.
