book review: west coast blues

I completely assumed (without reading the back of the book) that West Coast Blues by Jacques Tardi and Jean-Patrick Manchette was going to be about the west coast of North America. In fact, it’s a pretty awesome noir, set in France and Italy. There’s mistaken identity, violence, amnesia, murders in the woods, hoboes and a pretty interesting voiceover style. Captions I guess. That probably comes from the fact that it’s an adaptation of a novel. I also really loved the scope of the thing. A lot of time passes, and characters you assume would be in the whole story get killed/abandoned early on. Definitely worth a look.
